In the early years when cardiology was being birthed at Emory, several cardiologists started our story off right. We are all standing on the shoulders of those who came before. Since the beginning of cardiology at Emory, our faculty have shared what they know not only between departments but also with colleagues at other universities worldwide, creating unusual collaborations where one usually finds competition. Likewise, the story unfolds in many settings: Emory University Hospital, Grady Memorial Hospital, Atlanta Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC), Emory Crawford Long Hospital, Egleston Children’s Hospital, The Emory Clinic, dozens of satellite locations, and several research buildings. Note that the story, involving patient care, excellent teaching, and ground-breaking clinical and basic research, wouldn’t exist without the contributions of Emory faculty members in many departments, including medicine, pediatrics, surgery, radiology, anesthesiology, pharmacology, as well as the nursing staff. I am sometimes asked why Emory cardiology is consistently ranked in the top ten of the nation’s best heart centers.

They experience a number of strange adventures on the various islands they pass, they learn to respect the talkative Reepicheep to a whole new level by the end, and even annoying Eustace learns to turn a new leaf. This story follows Lucy, Edmond, and their whiny cousin Eustace as they sail with Prince Caspian and his crew in search of the seven Lords whom his father had send on an errand to the east about a decade prior (Narnia time). I can’t yet estimate what they’ll think of books 4-7 (after all, I’ve never read them myself!), so it will be interesting to see whether their preferences change or not. #2 The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, and They ranked the first three installments this way: Upon finishing this book the other night, I asked my kids (8, 9) which of the three so far they liked the best. We’ll finish the series by Spring, and I bet you anything my kids will just want to read this series again, if I ask ’em! I’m only reading them 1-2 chapters per night, but even at that slow rate, we can finish a book in less than 2 weeks. I feel like my family is burning through these books faster than we ever did The Little House on the Prairie series.

The Black Market by Charles Moore6/9/2023 Too much of it winds up in the ocean, where cool salt water drastically slows down decomposition rates. The rise of "disposable" products coupled with inexpensive mass-production processes resulted in an unprecedented number of plastic bottles, lighters, shopping bags, diapers and other detritus being thrown away each year. This initial discovery led the author on a decades-long investigation into plastic production, distribution and chemical makeup, which revealed a level of pollution-in the sea and otherwise-far more insidious than people realized. Moore, a lifelong seafarer, was spurred to activism when his catamaran stalled in a remote area of the northeast Pacific and he noticed a visible proliferation of plastic bits and other trash floating on the water's surface. Dubbed "The Great North Pacific Garbage Patch," it was an ominous indicator of the cavalier way in which humans dispose of tons of plastic trash. Firsthand account of how plastics pervade our oceans in unimaginable ways, killing marine life and causing wide-ranging environmental and health effects.Ĭapt.

I then learned that the things that happened to me, the things in the scenes, were my only material. I came into writing nonfiction already believing that my thoughts were messy, convoluted, and not worth much. And we need to just stop saying it to another generation of writers. But that sentence-that command-doesn’t say that. “Show, don’t tell” isn’t a way of reframing William Carlos Williams’ “so much depends upon a red wheelbarrow,” or that brilliant phrase “no ideas but in things” from his poem, “Paterson.” I know the real goal of “show, don’t tell” is to force a discipline that encourages the writer to see subjectivity emerging through those details. In many ways, the practice of writing is a practice of learning to re-see the world. The details are divine, and we should caress them, as Nabokov instructed. And details-pancakes, clenched fists, rainfall-were all I ever wanted, all I ever hoped for as a writer. Chicken soup and a broken figurine of a ceramic goose-there, they make a second life happen, built on images. I had no idea how much damage those three words would do after I’d depended on them for too long.ĭetail makes the mimesis machine start. The directive countered a school-based tendency toward abstraction and vagueness. And sure, it was good for me, in the way training wheels help in learning to ride a bike. When I learned “show, don’t tell,” I thought I’d discovered a guide that would never fail me.

Gogol souls6/7/2023 The plot of the novel relies on "dead souls" (i.e., "dead serfs") which are still accounted for in property registers. To count serfs (and people in general), the classifier " soul" was used: e.g., "six souls of serfs". Serfs were for most purposes considered the property of the landowner, who could buy, sell or mortgage them, as any other chattel. In the Russian Empire, before the emancipation of the serfs in 1861, landowners had the right to own serfs to farm their land. Poema", which contracted to merely "Dead Souls". The original title, as shown on the illustration (cover page), was "The Wanderings of Chichikov, or Dead Souls. Although the novel ends in mid-sentence (like Sterne's Sentimental Journey), it is regarded by some as complete in the extant form. Gogol intended the novel to be the first part of a three-volume work, but burned the manuscript of the second part shortly before his death. Gogol himself saw his work as an " epic poem in prose", and within the book characterised it as a " novel in verse". These people typify the Russian middle aristocracy of the time. The novel chronicles the travels and adventures of Pavel Ivanovich Chichikov (Russian: Павел Иванович Чичиков) and the people whom he encounters. Dead Souls ( Russian: «Мёртвые души» (pre-1918: Мертвыя души), Mjórtvyje dúshi) is a novel by Nikolai Gogol, first published in 1842, and widely regarded as an exemplar of 19th-century Russian literature. |
